Today Mike Ferguson published the long-awaited blog post containing more info and details about Guild Wars 2's unique World vs World PvP mode.
We have amazing PvE gameplay and intense competitive PvP in Guild Wars 2, but we also offer huge, open-field, server-versus-server warfare the likes of which you’ve never seen. We call it world vs. world or WvW.
Hello, everyone, I’m Mike Ferguson, one of the systems designers here at ArenaNet. I’m here to tell you about one of the most eagerly anticipated aspects of Guild Wars 2: world vs. world! This is a huge game type, and there’s a lot to talk about, so get comfy!
World vs World PvP is heavily inspired by Dark Age of Camelot's PvP system and pits 3 servers against each other in the Mists for two weeks. Four maps with strategic locations like keeps, towers, resource camps and more, are the battleground for fights between hundreds of players.
Every of these strategic objective grants points for the server completing and conquering them, and at the end of the two week period the server with the most points wins, and servers get ranked depending on their performance. Then, servers are matched against new opponents.
While in the Mists, (Guild Wars 2 Gold)players are boosted up to level 80 so that everybody has a chance to participate. While you might still be lacking the abilities that higher level players have already unlocked, you will still be able to compete and even earn level-appropriate gear and experience while doing so.
Siege Weapons
Claiming resource camps provides players with supply, that can then be used to craft powerful weaponry. Blueprints can be bought at Siegemaster NPCs and can be used to create a construction site at the desired location. The siege weapon can then be completed by players simply by adding a certain amount of supplies.
Trebuchets — Earlier I described how keeps and towers were extremely well protected—how could one ever hope to break through such formidable defenses? Might I suggest launching huge, flaming balls of destruction from your very own trebuchet? This long-range death dealer is a high-value target that often attracts enemy counterattacks, so make sure to protect your trebuchet!
